What a Home Energy Audit Covers

The purpose of a Home Energy Audit is to determine the general condition of the home with respect to energy performance and the homeowner's potential willingness to improve the home's energy performance and comfort.  It includes the use of state of the art, diagnostic equipment such as a Blower Door, Duct Leakage Tester and Infrared Camera, all of which aid in determining where the home's energy deficiencies are. 

The following is what you can expect from Home Efficiency Solutions LLC when an Energy Audit is performed on your home: 

  • Interview with the homeowner to hear concerns about the home (comfort, health, etc.)
  • Measuring house dimensions to accurately determine the square footage
  • Type of house framework (i.e. wood frame, cinder block, etc.)
  • Type of windows (i.e. glazing type and frame materials) and sizes
  • Type and sizes of doors
  • Type, model and location of heating/cooling system
  • Type, model and location of water heater
  • Type of ductwork, location & R-value of duct insulation and any indications of previous duct sealing
  • Type of foundation (i.e. crawl space, basement or slab)
  • R-values of wall, ceiling and floor insulation
  • Estimated age and efficiency of major appliances such as dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines and dryers
  • Visual indications of condensation and/or moisture intrusion
  • Presence and location of exhaust fans and determination of whether they are vented to the outdoors
  • Blower door test to determine overall house air infiltration
  • Zonal pressure test to determine which areas of the house are the leakiest
  • Duct pressure test (if applicable) to determine overall air leakage of forced-air system
  • Infrared camera scan to determine locations of air infiltration, missing/lacking insulation, moisture intrusion, etc.
  • All of this is usually done within a 4-6 hour time frame, depending on the size of the home.
  • Following the diagnostic and visual audit, the data collected is entered into analysis software to produce your complete Home Performance Energy Audit Report.

  • Action Report - Defines home components that are responsible for energy consumption
  • Performance Summary - Summarizes energy consumption and costs
  • Energy & Emissions Report - Summarizes emissions from the source based on type of fuel used and location
  • Improvement Analysis - Displays the impact of improvement measures along with estimated energy savings
  • Thermal Imaging Report - A compilation of infrared scans taken throughout the building envelope during the Blower Door test which reveals air infiltration, insufficient insulation, moisture, etc.
  • Recommendations - This is a list of recommended improvements that will greatly contribute to making the home become more energy efficient.
  • Utility Bill Analysis - A 12-month analysis of your home's utility bills
